Working together as a team of 2 or 20, Shelley works with you to tailor a treatment plan to meet your needs and help you achieve a state of health and well-being. As a New York State Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Shelley specializes in the treatment of trauma, anxiety, and depression, providing patients with the supportive alliance you need to work through difficult passages in life, in the comfort of a safe, therapeutic space with and experienced mental health professional. Using a multimodal approach to healing, Shelley helps patients strengthen relationships with others at work and home, and develop more effective coping strategies when facing setbacks associated with mild to severe depression and anxiety, OCD, panic disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and other mental health challenges.
Throughout her 18 years of practice in hospital settings and in private practice, Shelley developed a keen awareness of the importance of her role as an active listener. Informed by the patient's personal narrative, Shelley helps her patients integrate past experiences and build a new vocabulary and course of action for personal growth, change, and healing.
Shelley received her certification as a domestic violence and sexual assault counselor at New York Presbyterian Hospital, where she was honored with Advocate of the Year award in 2007; and served as a faculty and board member New York State Victims Assistance Academy .
A former runner in the New York and Boston Marathons, Shelley knows what it takes to train hard and perform at an optimal level. She also knows through personal experience as a patient who underwent seven consecutive surgeries, that a protracted recovery can be challenging and difficult to endure. Shelley helps patients gain the strength and confidence they need to surmount physical obstacles and psychological fears that often manifest when patients are ready to return to active participation in sports and other enjoyable activities with or without modifications. As a child of a Holocaust survivor, Shelley also learned the greatest lesson of all: A traumatic childhood or experience later in life, does not lead to a life sentence of trauma and depression. It leads to a deep appreciation for the gift of life. Through compassionate care and professional commitment, Shelley provides valuable insight as she helps patients process and make sense of the past, with renewed strength and improved coping skills available to ease the way from trauma to recovery. Shelley's extensive training and experience, and sharp analytical skills, set her apart from other therapists in the field.
If you feel anxious, depressed and have difficulty facing challenges in life, Shelley can provide you with the counseling and support you need to work through your problems, manage stress, and achieve a state of mental health and well-being, in a safe and supportive space. Shelley's goal is to help you heal, regain strength, and energy, and ensure that you find happiness and fulfillment through healthy, meaningful relationships, meaningful work and engagement in community life. You will learn essential coping strategies and effective communication skills that will help you confidently, compassionately and effectively interact with intimate partners, friends, family, colleagues, and clients.
Multimodal Trauma Therapy
Quite often, various modes of therapy and care are necessary to achieve optimal results. After assessing patient receptivity to various therapies, Shelley and her patient become active participants in the development and implementation of a personal treatment plan.
Shelley provides the ongoing psychological support most patients need to remain motivated and committed to the work necessary to heal and recover from trauma. With Shelley's support, patients experience the synergistic effects of targeted therapies and services, and together, patient and counselor bring about positive change.
Shelley will be there for you every step of the way, as you together, in therapeutic alliance.. As a trauma specialist, she has earned the trust of many brave people who reached out to her for help soon or long after experiencing traumatic events in life. While painful memories often resurface during sessions, the freedom to safely speak, reflect upon, and reprocess traumatic events, helps trauma survivors heal, unencumbered by the weight of the past.
As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), NYC Medical Reserve Corps. volunteer, and child of a Holocaust survivor, Shelley helps her patients make peace with the past and find joy and happiness in the simple pleasures in life.
